Tim Van Laere Gallery is pleased to present Great Hits the first exhibition with Anton Henning at the gallery.
Anton Henning, born in Berlin in 1964, whose artistic career since the mid-eighties has taken him to Berlin, London and New York, has been based in the countryside above Berlin for over 20 years now. He lives and works there with unabated zest on a work which due to its sheer opulence, complexity and playfulness cannot be classified amongst the common -isms of art criticism. The self-educated Anton Henning paints, photographs, films, sculpts, draws, makes music, designs and builds whole rooms. He virtually challenges the risk of provoking misunderstandings and polarising them without directly addressing the political side. In the figurative sense he is dismantling the entire history of art up to the present day, in order to completely reconstruct it. A kind of artistic synthesis.

In his first exhibition at the Tim van Laere Gallery, which is also his first individual exhibition in Belgium since his much acclaimed exhibition at SMAK in 2007, Anton Henning tries to define the highly subjective oscillating approach, between distinct conceptualism and pure intuition, in an exhibition with an impressively broad spectrum. Anton Henning's art combines long-time prejudged antipodes with the same naturalness, it knows how to seduce contemporary excellent gastronomy with the present day. Anton Henning is a master of good and bad taste, ruthless (self) irony, humorous ambiguity and virtually loving precision and this is in all lightness and virtuosity.

Anton Henning is one of a number of German artists to receive considerable international recognition. His creation, published in numerous publications is a challenge and inspiration for a whole generation of young painters. Anton Henning's works are represented in numerous international public and private collections, a.o. Anton Henning, in 1964 in Berlijn geboren en sinds midden jaren tachtig als kunstenaar actief in onder meer Berlijn, Londen en New York, is nu al ruim 20 jaar geworteld op het platteland in de buurt van Berlijn. Hij woont en werkt daar met een ontembare Schwung aan werken die alleen al vanwege hun opulentie, gelaagdheid en speelsheid niet vallen in te delen in de gebruikelijke ʻismenʼ in de kunstkritiek. De autodidact Anton Henning schildert, fotografeert, filmt, beeldhouwt, tekent, musiceert, ontwerpt en bouwt complete ruimten. Hij daagt het risico bijna uit, lokt misverstanden uit en polariseert, zonder daarbij rechtstreeks aan te sturen op het politieke. In overdrachtelijke zin ontleedt hij de volledige kunstgeschiedenis tot nu toe, om haar vervolgens opnieuw in elkaar te zetten. Een soort Gesamtkunstwerk.

In zijn eerste tentoonstelling bij Tim Van Laere Gallery, en tegelijkertijd ook zijn eerste solotentoonstelling in België sinds zijn veelbesproken expositie in het SMAK in 2007, probeert Anton Henning, in een tentoonstelling die een indrukwekkend breed spectrum bestrijkt, om juist die enorm subjectieve werkwijze aan de oppervlakte te brengen die oscilleert tussen geprononceerd conceptualisme en pure intuïtie. Anton Hennings kunst verbindt lang als vaststaand beschouwde tegenpolen met elkaar, met dezelfde vanzelfsprekendheid waarmee de hedendaagse topgastronomie erin slaagt om haar gasten te verleiden. Anton Henning is een meester van de goede, maar ook van de slechte smaak, van de meedogenloze (zelf)spot, van de humoristische dubbelzinnigheid en van de welhaast liefdevolle precisie – en dat op een manier die zowel schijnbaar moeiteloos is als uiterst virtuoos.

Anton Henning is een van de Duitse kunstenaars die een aanzienlijke internationale reputatie genieten. Zijn talrijke publicaties tot nu toe vormen voor een jongere generatie schilders een uitdaging én een inspiratiebron.
