Atelier Van Lieshout (AVL) is the internationally recognized studio and workshop of Dutch artist Joep van Lieshout, which he established in 1995. AVL produces a unique combination of practical work and autonomous work; this is what lead to interests by curators and museum directors on a global basis; from Tokyo to Toronto AVL has exhibited its work and realized projects. Atelier  Van Lieshout’s work stretches from machines to sculptures, from furniture design to buildings, from installation to designing utopias and distopias on an architectural level.
Reluctant to being conventional and limited, AVL always finds a creative and aesthetic solution. One of the most recognized projects is the establishment of AVL-Ville, 2001, a cultural and republic free state in Rotterdam’s harbours. While it only existed for one year, yet it fashioned a lot of publicity and attention and seemed to provoke and inspire creativity within the design industry.
A recent project is SlaveCity. SlaveCity can be described as a sinister utopian project.The 200.000 inhabitants work a number of hours a day on tele-services and keep the city running.SlaveCity is a green town which is not wasting the worlds resources and is completely self-sufficient.



 
Atelier Van Lieshout (AVL) is de studio en werkplaats rondom de Nederlandse kunstenaar Joep van Lieshout die zijn atelier opzette in 1995. AVL produceert een unieke combinatie van toegepast werk en autonoom werk en dit gegeven zorgde er de afgelopen twintig jaar voor dat curatoren en museumdirecteuren van Tokyo tot Toronto projecten en tentoonstellingen met het collectief realiseerden. Het oeuvre van Atelier Van Lieshout strekt zich uit van machines tot sculpturen, van meubels tot gebouwen, van installaties tot ontwerpen voor utopische en distopische steden.
 Wars van conventies en beperkingen vindt AVL altijd een creatieve en esthetische oplossing voor problemen. Een van de bekendste projecten is de oprichting van AVL-Ville, 2001, een culturele vrijstaat in de haven van Rotterdam. Hoewel deze slechts een jaar heeft bestaan heeft deze ‘nieuwe stad’ vele bezoekers, zowel leken als professionals, geïnspireerd.
 Een recent project is SlaveCity. SlaveCity kan omschreven worden als een sinistere ´distopie´. De 200.000 inwoners of ‘participants’ werken een vast aantal uren per dag in telemarketingvoorzieningen en onderhouden de stad. SlaveCity is een groene stad, waarin geen energie wordt verspild en die volledig zelfvoorzienend is.
