In the historic Palazzo Donarelli Ricci located at Via Giulia 98 in Rome, Tim Van Laere Gallery will open its new space on November 18, 2023. This space will be inaugurated with a solo exhibition by Ben Sledsens. The title of the exhibition Un Nuovo Viaggio is an allusion by the artist to a new chapter in his own practice, but also in that of the gallery.

 

Ben Sledsens' oeuvre offers a glimpse into his imaginary world, a utopia in which he wants to live himself. His carefully constructed compositions and their vibrant color palette open up to the viewer's eyes and invite them to explore the unexplored world of his imagination. With his great pictorial insight, Sledsens creates an intriguing puzzle of references by constantly using motifs, themes and objects, building a recognizable and coherent body of work in which he magnifies, emphasizes and idealizes certain elements of nature and his everyday environment whereby they surpass our realistic perception. 

 

Central to the work is his profound understanding of painterly tradition. His large format canvases where he plays with color and reinterprets the landscape, exist in a long tradition of painting that reference Henri Matisse, Pierre Bonnard, James Ensor, Claude Monet, Henri Rousseau, and Pieter Bruegel the Elder, yet his works are part of a bigger poetic universe that is all his own. While in his previous exhibition Sledsens mainly focused on the influence of light on our perception of color and explored the possibilities of a monochrome palette, he now returns to a more nuanced and complementary color scheme.

Sledsens attaches great importance to the power of color to evoke moods in the viewer, resulting in a visual journey of discovery that can evoke different emotions, memories and stories in each spectator. Nature is a central theme within Ben Sledsens' oeuvre, but his landscapes are always composed from his own imagination and not painted from reality. His landscapes are never merely the background scenery for his figures, but act as an active element that enters into dialogue with the viewer. Apart from the artist and his muse and girlfriend Charlotte De Geyter, all characters are fictionally composed, with all characteristics selected in the same way as the different parts of the landscape. These characters wander through the landscapes, without any indication of how they got there or where they are going. He stages them as 'chance encounters', on the one hand between the character and the landscape, on the other hand with the viewer. To encourage these encounters, the artist often deliberately creates different paths through his works, inviting the viewer to step into his world.

 

Ben Sledsens (°1991, Antwerp) lives and works in Antwerp, Belgium. The artist's work is found in several international collections, including the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego (San Diego), M HKA (Antwerp), CAC (Malaga), Fundacion Canaria para el Desarollo de la Pintura (Las Palmas De Gran Canaria), the Hermitage (St. Petersburg), Nassima Landau Art Foundation (Tel Aviv).

Questo spazio sarà inaugurato con una mostra personale di Ben Sledsens. Il titolo della mostra Un Nuovo Viaggio è un'allusione dell'artista a un nuovo capitolo della sua pratica, ma anche a quella della galleria. 

 

L'opera di Ben Sledsens offre uno sguardo sul suo mondo immaginario, un'utopia in cui vuole vivere lui stesso. Le sue composizioni accuratamente costruite e la loro vibrante tavolozza di colori si aprono agli occhi dello spettatore e lo invitano a scoprire il mondo inesplorato della sua immaginazione. Con il suo grande acume pittorico, Sledsens crea un intrigante puzzle di riferimenti utilizzando costantemente motivi, temi e oggetti, costruendo un'opera riconoscibile e coerente in cui ingrandisce, enfatizza e idealizza alcuni elementi della natura e dell'ambiente quotidiano con cui supera la nostra percezione realistica. 

 

Al centro del lavoro c'è la sua profonda conoscenza della tradizione pittorica. Le sue tele di grande formato, in cui gioca con il colore e reinterpreta il paesaggio, si inseriscono in una lunga tradizione pittorica che fa riferimento a Henri Matisse, Pierre Bonnard, James Ensor, Claude Monet, Henri Rousseau e Pieter Bruegel il Vecchio, ma le sue opere fanno parte di un universo poetico più ampio che è interamente suo. Mentre nella sua precedente mostra Sledsens si è concentrato principalmente sull'influenza della luce sulla nostra percezione del colore, esplorando le possibilità di una tavolozza monocromatica, ora ritorna a uno schema di colori più sfumato e complementare. 

Sledsens attribuisce grande importanza al potere del colore per evocare stati d'animo nello spettatore, dando vita a un viaggio visivo di scoperta che può evocare emozioni, ricordi e storie diverse in ogni spettatore. La natura è un tema centrale nell'opera di Ben Sledsens, ma i suoi paesaggi sono sempre composti dalla sua immaginazione e non dipinti dalla realtà. I suoi paesaggi non sono quindi mai solo lo scenario di sfondo per le sue figure, ma agiscono come elemento attivo che entra in dialogo con lo spettatore. A parte l'artista e la sua musa e fidanzata Charlotte De Geyter, tutti i personaggi sono composti in modo fittizio, con caratteristiche scelte allo stesso modo delle diverse parti del paesaggio. Questi personaggi vagano per i paesaggi, senza alcuna indicazione di come siano arrivati lì o dove stiano andando. Li mette in scena come "incontri casuali", da un lato tra il personaggio e il paesaggio, ma anche con lo spettatore. Per favorire questi incontri, l'artista crea spesso, molto deliberatamente, diversi percorsi nelle sue opere, invitando lo spettatore a entrare nel suo mondo.

In het historische Palazzo Donarelli Ricci gelegen op de Via Giulia 98 te Rome, opent Tim Van Laere Gallery op 18 November 2023 haar nieuwe ruimte. Deze ruimte wordt ingehuldigd met een solotentoonstelling van Ben Sledsens. De titel van de tentoonstelling Un Nuovo Viaggio is een toespeling van de kunstenaar enerzijds op een nieuw hoofdstuk in zijn eigen praktijk, maar ook in dat van de galerie. 

 

Het oeuvre van Ben Sledsens biedt een kijk in zijn imaginaire wereld, een utopie waarin hij zelf wil leven. Zijn zorgvuldig opgebouwde composities en hun levendig kleurpalet openen zich voor de ogen van de kijker en nodigen deze uit om de onontgonnen wereld van zijn verbeelding te verkennen. Met zijn groot picturale inzicht creëert Sledsens een intrigerende puzzel van referenties door constant gebruik te maken van motieven, thema's en objecten, en bouwt zo een herkenbaar en coherent oeuvre op waarbij hij bepaalde elementen uit de natuur en zijn dagelijkse omgeving uitvergroot, benadrukt en idealiseert waarmee ze onze realistische waarneming voorbijstreven. 

 

Centraal in het werk staat zijn diepgaande kennis van de schilderkunsttraditie. Zijn doeken op groot formaat, waarin hij met kleur speelt en het landschap herinterpreteert, bestaan in een lange schilderstraditie die verwijst naar Henri Matisse, Pierre Bonnard, James Ensor, Claude Monet, Henri Rousseau en Pieter Bruegel de Oude, maar zijn werken maken deel uit van een groter poëtisch universum dat helemaal het zijne is. Waar Sledsens in zijn voorgaande tentoonstelling voornamelijk focuste op de invloed van het licht op onze kleurwaarneming en daarbij de mogelijkheden van een monochroom palet opzocht, keert hij nu terug naar een meer genuanceerd en complementair kleurenschema. 

Sledsens hecht veel belang aan de kracht van kleur om stemmingen op te roepen bij de kijker, wat resulteert in een visuele ontdekkingsreis die bij elke toeschouwer andere emoties, herinneringen en verhalen kan oproepen. De natuur vormt een centraal thema binnen het oeuvre van Ben Sledsens, maar zijn landschappen zijn steeds samengesteld vanuit zijn eigen verbeelding en niet geschilderd naar de werkelijkheid. Zijn landschappen zijn dan ook nooit louter het achtergronddecor voor zijn figuren, maar treden op als een actief element dat de dialoog aangaat met de toeschouwer. Buiten de kunstenaar en zijn muze en vriendin Charlotte De Geyter, zijn alle personages fictief samengesteld waarbij alle karakteristieken op dezelfde manier werden uitgekozen als de verschillende onderdelen van het landschap. Deze personages dwalen door de landschappen, zonder enige duiding hoe ze daar zijn terecht gekomen of waar ze naartoe gaan. Hij ensceneert ze als ‘toevallige ontmoetingen’, enerzijds tussen het personage en het landschap maar anderzijds ook met de toeschouwer. Om die ontmoetingen aan te moedigen creëert de kunstenaar vaak ook heel doelbewust verschillende paden doorheen zijn werken, om zo de toeschouwer uit te nodigen om in zijn wereld te stappen.
