Tim Van Laere Gallery is pleased to announce Oi on Canvas, the new solo show of Belgian artist Dennis Tyfus. This is the third solo show of Tyfus since joining Tim Van Laere Gallery in 2021 and his first show in our Roman space. In this exhibition he will present his paintings for the first time to the public. 

 

Born in Antwerp in 1979, Dennis Tyfus is a shape-shifter of contemporary art—an artist, musician, publisher, and performer whose work resists categorization. With a practice that flows freely between drawing, sculpture, installation, music, tattooing, video, publishing, and live performance, Tyfus creates an ever-expanding, self-sustaining universe where each medium cross-pollinates the other. 

 

At the heart of Tyfus’s work is a spirit of improvisation, irreverence, and play. Rooted in the ethos of DIY and underground culture, he transforms constraints into opportunities and the unexpected into a driving force. His imagery often emerges from hypnagogic states—those moments between wakefulness and sleep—resulting in surreal, dreamlike compositions tinged with humor, absurdity, and a hint of menace. His influences, ranging from the Situationists to improvisation - from Dieter Roth to Mike Kelley, are refracted through his own unique sensibility, producing works that are at once deeply personal and widely resonant. 

 

With Oi on Canvas, Tyfus extends his restless, genre-defying practice into the realm of painting, approaching the medium with the same unfiltered energy that defines his music, performances, and installations. He maintains his signature balance between the absurd, the poetic, and the confrontational. These works - simultaneously narrative yet intimate and estranged,  familiar and foreign - capture moments that feel like fragments of overheard dreams. Rather than treating painting as a fixed or sacred form, he uses it as another stage for his improvisational sensibility, allowing figures, landscapes, and symbols to emerge organically, often from half-remembered dreams or fleeting images lodged in the subconscious. The result is a body of work where the absurd rubs shoulders with the poetic, and the confrontational hides inside moments of tenderness. Each canvas operates like a portal into a parallel world: one foot planted in everyday recognizable gestures and settings, the other drifting toward the uncanny and the surreal. There is a deliberate slipperiness to these scenes—they appear narrative, yet resist clear interpretation, as if we are witnessing only fragments of a story whose beginning and end remain just out of reach. By holding the viewer between intimacy and estrangement, familiarity and alienation, Tyfus invites us not to decode, but to inhabit these painted moments, letting their quiet humor, strange beauty, and disquieting undertones work on us over time.

 

The work of Dennis Tyfus is both deeply personal and universally disarming—forcing us to reconsider the boundaries between creator and viewer, everyday life and the uncanny, seriousness and absurdity. Through his anarchic charm and boundless creative energy, he offers us not just works of art, but an experience - ever-changing, ever-surprising, ever-­alive. Dennis Tyfus is not merely producing art; he is staging a continuous, unpredictable situation in which life itself is the medium.

Dennis Tyfus lives and works in Antwerp. His work has been exhibited internationally, including at the Middelheim Museum, Antwerp (BE); M HKA, Antwerp (BE); S.M.A.K., Ghent (BE); Bozar, Brussels (BE); CAPC Museum of Contemporary Art of Bordeaux, Bordeaux (FR); São Paulo Art Gallery, São Paulo (BR); Damtschach Castle, Damtschach (AT); Kunstschlager, Reykjavik (IS); and Kunstverein Mannheim and Ludwigshafen, Ludwigshafen am Rhein (DE). His work also features in public collections, such as those of M HKA and the Middelheim Museum, both in Antwerp (BE).

Tim Van Laere Gallery è lieta di presentare Oi on Canvas, la nuova mostra personale dell'artista belga Dennis Tyfus. Questa è la terza mostra personale di Tyfus da quando si è unito alla Tim Van Laere Gallery nel 2021, nonché la sua prima mostra nel nostro spazio romano. In questa esposizione presenta per la prima volta al pubblico le sue opere pittoriche.

 

Dennis Tyfus, nato ad Anversa nel 1979, è una figura poliedrica della scena contemporanea: artista, musicista, editore e performer, il cui lavoro sfida ogni tentativo di catalogazione. Con una pratica che fluisce liberamente tra disegno, scultura, installazione, musica, tatuaggi, video, editoria e performance dal vivo, Tyfus crea un universo autonomo e in continua espansione, dove ogni mezzo artistico si interconnette e si arricchisce reciprocamente. 

 

Al centro del suo lavoro c'è un profondo spirito di improvvisazione, irriverenza e gioco. La sua pratica, saldamente radicata nell’etica del DIY (fai-da-te) e nella cultura underground, trasforma le limitazioni in opportunità e l'imprevisto in una forza che guida il suo processo creativo. Le sue immagini spesso nascono da stati ipnagogici—i momenti tra veglia e sonno—e si traducono in composizioni surreali e oniriche, percorse da un umorismo grottesco, dall’assurdità e da un sottile senso di minaccia. Riflesso della sua sensibilità unica, il lavoro di Tyfus è permeato delle influenze dei Situazionisti e dell’improvvisazione, passando per Dieter Roth e Mike Kelley, producendo opere che sono tanto intime e personali quanto universali e ampiamente condivisibili.

 

Con Oi on Canvas, Tyfus estende la sua pratica irrequieta e priva di confini nel campo della pittura, affrontando il mezzo con la stessa energia non filtrata che caratterizza la sua musica, le sue performance e le sue installazioni. La sua firma distintiva – un perfetto equilibrio tra l’assurdo, il poetico e il conflittuale – emerge anche in queste opere. Questi lavori, al contempo narrativi e sospesi tra intimità e straniamento, familiarità ed estraneità, catturano momenti che sembrano frammenti di sogni intercettati. Piuttosto che trattare la pittura come una forma fissa o sacra, Tyfus la reinventa come un palcoscenico per la sua sensibilità improvvisativa, consentendo a figure, paesaggi e simboli di emergere organicamente, spesso da sogni vagamente ricordati o immagini fugaci impresse nel subconscio. Il risultato è un corpo di opere dove l’assurdo si mescola con il poetico, e il conflittuale si nasconde dentro momenti di tenerezza. Ogni tela funziona come un portale verso un mondo parallelo: un piede ancorato a gesti e ambienti quotidiani, l’altro che si spinge verso l’inquietante e il surreale. C’è una deliberata scivolosità in queste scene: appaiono narrative, ma resistono a una chiara interpretazione, come se stessimo assistendo solo a frammenti di una storia il cui inizio e la cui fine rimangono appena fuori portata. Tenendo lo spettatore sospeso tra intimità e straniamento, familiarità e alienazione, Tyfus ci invita non a decodificare, ma ad abitare questi momenti dipinti, lasciando che il loro sottile umorismo, l’inusuale bellezza e le sfumature inquietanti agiscano su di noi nel tempo.

 

Il lavoro di Dennis Tyfus è al contempo profondamente personale e universalmente disarmante, costringendoci a riconsiderare i confini tra creatore e spettatore, vita quotidiana e il soprannaturale, serietà e assurdità. Con il suo fascino anarchico e l'energia creativa senza limiti, Tyfus non ci offre semplicemente opere d'arte, ma un'esperienza: in continua trasformazione, sempre sorprendente, sempre viva. Non è un artista che produce opere in senso tradizionale: con la sua pratica, Tyfus crea una situazione continua e imprevedibile, dove la vita stessa diventa il medium.

Il suo lavoro è stato esposto a livello internazionale presso Middelheim Museum, Anversa (BE); M HKA, Anversa (BE); S.M.A.K., Gand (BE); Bozar, Bruxelles (BE); CAPC Museum of Contemporary Art of Bordeaux, Bordeaux (FR); São Paulo Art Gallery, San Paolo (BR); Damtschach Castle, Damtschach (AT); Kunstschlager, Reykjavik (IS); Kunstverein Mannheim e Ludwigshafen, Ludwigshafen am Rhein (DE).
