Tim Van Laere Gallery presents its third solo exhibition by the internationally acclaimed Austrian artist Franz West (°1947, Vienna - †2012, Vienna). West is without doubt one of the most important sculptors and environment artists of contemporary art. His oeuvre is characterized not only by the forms he invents, but also for the communicative quality with which he directly addresses the viewer, urging him/ her to participate. The exhibition brings together various aspects from the broad oeuvre of Franz West. Both collages, sculptures from papier-mâché, plaster and polyester, furniture, an outdoor sculpture in aluminium and installations from different periods of his career are shown.

 

In the mid-1970s, West made his so-called Paßstücke (Adaptives), movable sculptures made of plaster and metal that were intended to be moved, touched, and handled—transforming viewers into participants. For West, the essence of the artwork is not the aesthetic quality, but how the work is used. These objects stimulate the ingenuity of the public and disrupt conditioned behavior in the exhibition space. From the 80s, he incorporated more fragile materials, such as papier-mâché and glass bottles in his sculptures, which he combined in the Labstücke (Refresher Pieces).

 

As a consistent continuation of the Paßstücke, West has been working since 1987 to construct furniture for sitting and reclining, using prefabricated elements and discarded industrial products which he covered by stretching fabrics or carpets over them. His work makes us think about our living space and the social and personal activities that are happening there. The artist aims to create a certain interaction between artwork and viewer, between object and subject. An interaction that must ensure that art becomes an open and interactive process.

 

Later in his career, Franz West also focuses on sculptures in the public space.

 

Franz West received international recognition since the 1980s. His work has been a fixture in countless international survey exhibitions such as Documenta and Biennales all over the world, and it is included in major public collections including Center Pompidou, Paris; Tate Modern, London; Middelheim Museum, Antwerp; M HKA, Antwerp; S.M.A.K., Ghent; Kunsthaus, Graz, Graz; Museum Ludwig, Cologne; mumok, Vienna; The Museum of Modern Art, New York; MAK, Vienna; Museum for Modern Art (MMK), Frankfurt; Museo Nazionale delle Arte del XXI Secolo (MAXXI), Rome; Albertina, Vienna; Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; Kunsthaus Bregenz, Bregenz; Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; Philadelphia Museum of Art, Philadelphia; and Hirschhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington D.C.

 

In fall 2018, a major retrospective will open at the Centre Pompidou, Paris, and will travel to the Tate Modern, London the following year.

Tim Van Laere Gallery presenteert haar derde solotentoonstelling van de Oostenrijkse kunstenaar Franz West (°1947, Wenen - †2012, Wenen). West is ongetwijfeld één van de belangrijkste beeldhouwers en environmentkunstenaars binnen de hedendaagse kunst. Zijn oeuvre laat zich niet enkel kenmerken door zijn unieke vormen, maar ook door de communicatieve kwaliteit waarmee hij een directe dialoog aangaat met de toeschouwer en hem/haar uitnodigt tot actieve participatie. De tentoonstelling brengt verschillende aspecten samen uit het brede oeuvre van Franz West. Er worden zowel collages, sculpturen uit papier-mâché, gips en polyester, meubels, een buitensculptuur in aluminium en installaties getoond uit verschillende periodes van zijn carrière.

 

Halverwege de jaren 70 maakt West zijn zogenaamde Paßstücke, verplaatsbare sculpturen uit gips en metaal die waren ontworpen om te verplaatsen, aan te raken en te gebruiken. Voor West is de essentie van het kunstwerk niet de uiterlijke verschijning, maar vooral hoe het werk wordt gebruikt. Deze voorwerpen stimuleren de vindingrijkheid van het publiek en ontregelen geconditioneerd gedrag in de tentoonstellingsruimte. Vanaf de jaren 80 verwerkte hij ook fragielere materialen zoals papier-mâché en glazen flessen in zijn sculpturen die hij bundelde onder de titel Labstücke (Refresher Pieces).

 

Als consequente voortzetting van de Paßstücke hield West zich sinds 1987 bezig met het construeren van zit- en leunmeubilair, waarbij hij gebruik maakt van geprefabriceerde elementen en afgedankte industriële producten die hij bekleedt door er stoffen of tapijten overheen te spannen. Zijn werk doet nadenken over onze leefruimte en de sociale en persoonlijke activiteiten die daar tot stand komen. De kunstenaar is erop uit een zekere interactie te creëren tussen kunstwerk en toeschouwer, tussen object en subject. Deze wisselwerking moet ervoor zorgen dat kunst een open en interactief proces wordt.

 

Later in zijn carrière legt Franz West zich ondermeer ook toe op sculpturen in de publieke ruimte.

 

Franz West behaalde internationale erkenning sinds de jaren ’80. Zijn werk werd getoond op verschillende internationale overzichtstentoonstellingen zoals de Documenta en Biennales van over de hele wereld, en werd opgenomen in grote internationale collecties inclusief Centre Georges Pompidou, Parijs; Tate Modern, Londen; Middelheimmuseum, Antwerpen; M HKA, Antwerpen; S.M.A.K., Gent; Kunsthaus, Graz, Graz; Museum Ludwig, Keulen; mumok, Vienna; The Museum of Modern Art, New York; MAK, Vienna; Museum für Moderne Kunst (MMK), Frankfurt; Museo Nazionale delle arte del XXI Secolo (MAXXI), Rome; Albertina, Vienna; Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; Kunsthaus Bregenz, Bregenz; Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; Philadelphia Museum of Art, Philadelphia; en Hirschhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington D.C. 

 

In het najaar van 2018 zal er een grote overzichtstentoonstelling openen in het Centre Pompidou in Parijs, dat het jaar nadien doorreist naar Tate Modern in Londen.
