Tim Van Laere Gallery is pleased to announce SELF PORTRAITS AND NUDES (GESAMTKUNSTWERK), Jonathan Meese’s fifth solo exhibition at the gallery.

 

Jonathan Meese (°1970 Tokyo, lives and works in Berlin and Hamburg) is renowned for his multi-faceted work, including wildly exuberant paintings, installations, ecstatic performances and a powerful body of sculptures in a variety of media. Apparently effortlessly, he has developed in all genres an independent and at the same time unique vocabulary that gives his work a variety, visual energy and quality which, according to Robert Fleck, has been unheard of since Picasso. Meese creates an expansive personal mythology, which also features characters inspired by history, legends and science fiction. Throughout his works you can find a not easily decodable system of signs/badges, neologisms, symbols, and figurative allusions to all types of power seekers, mythical personages and geniuses of history, stars and starlets of pop culture, or fictional heroes of novels and films. All of Meese's works share a humor tending towards the grotesque, as well as a powerful, original creative will. Both are driven and supported by a striving for a rule of art, the dictatorship of art. What is meant here is the development of a new world order where art is the legislative power, and free play the foundation of all life and creation.This utopian approach runs like a leitmotif through all his works and brings his individual parts of the oeuvre together to form the Jonathan Meese Gesamtkunstwerk. He does not aim at anarchy, but rather the rule of metabolic necessity: 'Art is total play.’

 

In this exhibition, Meese presents a new body of works, which capture the interplay of interior and exterior worlds, combining the phantasmagoria of the imagination with the bric-à-brac of mundane reality. To him, art is osmosis. His paintings are filled with photosynthesis and mimicry, which allows us to enter the counter world. The self portraits and nudes point out that all self portraits are nude and all nudes are self portraits. Within the self portraits you can find the childhood of everything, with the ultimate self portrait being the embryo. According to Meese this exhibition celebrates “the birth of the Gesamtkunstwerk”. This theme is also visualized in the large scale painting TOTAL RECALL (THE R.I.P.-DIDDLOIDEN ARE BACK TO FIGHT THE “KAMPF UM KUNST (BIRTH OF GESAMTKUNSTWERK)). With this exhibition, he pays hommage to evolution, nature, love, power, collage, abstraction, animalism, and art itself. Meese celebrates especially the following artists and “Spielkinder”: Van Gogh, Fidus, Warhol, Dali, Picasso, Balthus, Barbarella, Pippi Longstocking, and Moominism.

 

Jonathan Meese has exhibited globally with museums and leading art galleries including solo shows at Pinakothek der Moderne, Munich; Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien, Vienna; Kunstmuseum, The Hague; CAC Málaga, Málaga; Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami; De Appel Center for Contemporary Art, Amsterdam. Tim Van Laere Gallery presenteert “SELF PORTRAITS AND NUDES (GESAMTKUNSTWERK), de vijfde solotentoonstelling van Jonathan Meese in de galerie. 

 

Jonathan Meese (°1970 Tokyo, woont en werkt in Berlijn en Hamburg) staat bekend om zijn veelzijdig werk, dat gaat van exuberante schilderijen, installaties, extatische performances tot een krachtig oeuvre van sculpturen in diverse media. Schijnbaar moeiteloos ontwikkelde hij in alle genres een zelfstandig en uniek vocabularium dat zijn werk de verscheidenheid, visuele energie en de kwaliteit geeft, wat volgens Robert Fleck ongekend is sinds Picasso. Meese creëert een uitgebreide persoonlijke mythologie met personages die zijn geïnspireerd door geschiedenis, legendes en sciencefiction. In zijn werken vind je een niet gemakkelijk decodeerbaar systeem van tekens/badges, neologismen, symbolen en figuratieve toespelingen op alle soorten machtszoekers, mythische personages en genieën uit de geschiedenis, popsterren, of fictieve helden van romans en films. Het werk van Meese kenmerkt zich door een gevoel van humor dat neigt naar zowel het groteske, als naar een krachtige, originele creatieve wil. Beide worden gedreven en ondersteund door het streven naar de dictatuur van de kunst. Wat hier bedoeld wordt, is de ontwikkeling van een nieuwe wereldorde waar kunst de wetgevende macht is en vrij spel de basis van al het leven en creatie. Deze utopische benadering loopt als een rode draad doorheen al zijn werk en brengt de afzonderlijke delen van zijn oeuvre bij elkaar tot een Gesamtkunstwerk. In deze tentoonstelling presenteert Meese een nieuwe reeks werken dat het samenspel van innerlijke- en uiterlijke werelden vastlegt en de fantasmagorie van de verbeelding combineert met de bric-à-brac van de alledaagse realiteit. Kunst is voor hem osmose. Zijn schilderijen zijn gevuld met fotosynthese en mimiek, die ons toelaten om een alternatief universum te betreden. De zelfportretten en naakten wijzen erop dat alle zelfportretten naakt zijn en dat alle naakten zelfportretten zijn. Binnen de zelfportretten vind je de kindertijd van alles terug, waarbij het ultieme zelfportret het embryo is. Volgens Meese viert deze tentoonstelling “de geboorte van het Gesamtkunstwerk”. Dit thema wordt ook gevisualiseerd in het grootschalige schilderij TOTAL RECALL (THE R.I.P.-DIDDLOIDEN ARE BACK TO FIGHT THE “KAMPF UM KUNST (BIRTH OF GESAMTKUNSTWERK)). Met deze tentoonstelling brengt hij een hommage aan evolutie, natuur, liefde, kracht, collage, abstractie, animalisme en de kunst zelf. Meese viert vooral de volgende kunstenaars en “Spielkinder”: Van Gogh, Fidus, Warhol, Dali, Picasso, Balthus, Barbarella, Pippi Langkous en het Moominisme.

 

Jonathan Meese heeft wereldwijd geëxposeerd in musea en toonaangevende kunstgalerijen, waaronder solotentoonstellingen in Pinakothek der Moderne, München; Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien, Wenen; Kunstmuseum, Den Haag; CAC Malaga, Malaga; Museum voor Hedendaagse Kunst, Noord-Miami; De Appel Centrum voor Hedendaagse Kunst, Amsterdam.
