Tim Van Laere Gallery Rome is pleased to present A.R.T. IS TOTAL “FAMILY BUSINESS”!, AGRIPPINA=ARTMOTHERZ, NERO=ARTSOLDIER (CÄSAREN-ROULETTE, NO PROBLEM, YEAH). This is the sixth solo show of Jonathan Meese since joining Tim Van Laere Gallery in 2011 and his first show in our Roman space.

 

Jonathan Meese (b. 1970, Tokyo, lives and works in Berlin and Ahrensburg) is known for his versatile oeuvre, which includes exuberant paintings, extravagant installations and ecstatic performances, writings, as well as a powerful body of sculptures in various media. With its rich and personal mythology, bursting with symbols, neologisms and metaphors, the artist’s multi-faceted work arouses fascination. Seemingly effortlessly, Meese manages to distinguish himself in each genre with an independent and unique vocabulary that allows his works to exude a visual energy, which, according to curator Robert Fleck, is unparalleled since Picasso. All of Meese's works share a humor tending towards the grotesque, as well as a powerful, original creative will. Both are driven and supported by a striving for a rule of art, the dictatorship of art. What is meant here is the development of a new world order where art is the legislative power, and free play the foundation of all life and creation.This utopian approach runs like a leitmotif through all his works and brings the individual parts of the oeuvre together to form the Jonathan Meese Gesamtkunstwerk. He does not aim at anarchy, but rather the rule of metabolic necessity: “Art is total play”.

 

For his solo exhibition at Palazzo Donarelli Ricci, Jonathan Meese draws inspiration from the powerful imperial dynasties of Ancient Rome. He presents paintings, drawings, sculptures, manifestos and a video all dealing with various prototypes of Caesars, their families, their surroundings and their actions and behaviour. He shows images of Agrippina, Nero, Caligula, Drusilla, Commodus, Galba, Julius Caesar, Claudius, Tiberius, Nero’s cat, Agrippina’s dog, Caesarion, Cleopatra, gladiators, etcetera. The whole exhibition is Gesamtkunstwerk Italia, Gesamtkunstwerk Rome, Gesamtkunstwerk Total Empire of Art and is a declaration of love for old Roman History. The show is a total collage and Meese plays with all objects and images. He puts them into new relationships, like an art puppet-master. Meese claims “I am also just a caesar of art, like all artists, and I put myself into the scenery and into the role, like being a player in total cosplay and disguise-adventures. In art all disguises and all role-playing games are allowed, needed and accepted, there is no limit. Art is total freedom, we are allowed to play with everything, to use everything and to transform everything. Censorship should be forbidden in art. Art is free and not ideology. Art is not our taste, art is evolution, art is the driving force of the future. Art is what is needed to be done, not our political or religious views. Art is no life-style, art is total metabolism. Art is no politics, art is no religion. Art is total power without ideological strength and might. We need the Gesamtkunstwerk Europe, we need the Gesamtkunstwerk planet earth, we need the Gesamtkunstwerk cosmos, the Gesamtkunstwerk universe, the Gesamtkunstwerk Big Bang, and the Gesamtkunstwerk total love. Art should rule us. Art is total leadership of love. Art will destroy all ideologies, Art is total wonderland. Art will conquer all. Art is total future. Art is total love”.

Tim Van Laere Gallery è lieta di presentare A.R.T. IS TOTAL “FAMILY BUSINESS”!, AGRIPPINA=ARTMOTHERZ, NERO=ARTSOLDIER (CÄSAREN-ROULETTE, NO PROBLEM, YEAH), la sesta mostra personale di Jonathan Meese da quando si è unito alla Tim Van Laere Gallery nel 2011, nonché la sua prima mostra nel nostro spazio romano.

 

Jonathan Meese (nato nel 1970 a Tokyo, vive e lavora a Berlino e ad Ahrensburg) è noto per la sua opera versatile, che comprende dipinti esuberanti, installazioni stravaganti e performance estatiche, scrittura e un potente corpo scultoreo in diversi media. L’opera poliedrica dell’artista suscita fascinazione attraverso una ricca e personale mitologia, carica di simboli, neologismi e metafore. Apparentemente senza sforzo, Meese riesce a distinguersi in ogni genere con un vocabolario indipendente e unico che permette alle sue opere di emanare un'energia visiva che, secondo il curatore Robert Fleck, non ha eguali dai tempi di Picasso. Tutte le opere di Meese sono accomunate da un umorismo tendente al grottesco e da una potente e originale volontà creativa. Ambedue sono guidati e sostenuti dalla ricerca di una regola dell'arte, la dittatura dell’arte, ovvero lo sviluppo di un nuovo ordine mondiale in cui l'arte sia il potere legislativo e il gioco libero il fondamento di tutta la vita e la creazione. Questo approccio utopico attraversa come un leitmotiv tutte le sue opere e riunisce le singole parti dell'opera per formare la Gesamtkunstwerk di Jonathan Meese. Esso non mira all'anarchia, ma piuttosto alla regola della necessità metabolica: "L'arte è un gioco totale".

 

Per la mostra personale a Palazzo Donarelli Ricci, Jonathan Meese si ispira alle potenti dinastie imperiali dell'Antica Roma. Presenta dipinti, disegni, sculture, manifesti e un video che trattano vari prototipi di Cesare, le loro famiglie, i loro ambienti e le loro azioni e comportamenti. Tra questi Agrippina, Nerone, Caligola, Drusilla, Commodo, Galba, Giulio Cesare, Claudio, Tiberio, il gatto di Nerone, il cane di Agrippina, Cesarione, Cleopatra, i gladiatori, ecc. L’intera mostra è Gesamtkunstwerk Italia, Gesamtkunstwerk Roma, Gesamtkunstwerk Impero Totale dell'Arte, ed è una dichiarazione d'amore all’antica storia romana. La mostra è un collage totale e Meese, come un burattinaio dell’arte, gioca con tutte le immagini e gli oggetti ponendoli in nuove relazioni. Meese afferma: "Sono anche semplicemente un Cesare dell'arte, come tutti gli artisti, e mi pongo nello scenario e nel ruolo, come se fossi un giocatore in totale cosplay e le avventure fossero travestite. Nell'arte tutti i travestimenti e tutti i giochi di ruolo sono permessi, necessari e accettati, non c'è limite. L'arte è libertà totale, ci è permesso giocare con tutto, usare tutto e trasformare tutto. La censura dovrebbe essere vietata nell'arte. L'arte è libera e non è ideologia. L'arte non è il nostro gusto, l'arte è l'evoluzione, l'arte è la forza motrice del futuro. L'arte è ciò che è necessario fare, non le nostre opinioni politiche o religiose. L'arte non è stile di vita, l'arte è metabolismo totale. L'arte non è politica, l'arte non è religione. L'arte è potere totale senza forza e potenza ideologica. Abbiamo bisogno della Gesamtkunstwerk Europa, abbiamo bisogno della Gesamtkunstwerk pianeta Terra, abbiamo bisogno della Gesamtkunstwerk cosmo, della Gesamtkunstwerk universo, della Gesamtkunstwerk Big Bang e della Gesamtkunstwerk amore totale. Tim Van Laere Gallery Rome presenteert A.R.T. IS TOTAL "FAMILY BUSINESS"!, AGRIPPINA=ARTMOTHERZ, NERO=ARTSOLDIER (CÄSAREN-ROULETTE, NO PROBLEM, YEAH). Dit is de zesde solotentoonstelling van Jonathan Meese sinds het begin van zijn samenwerking met Tim Van Laere Gallery in 2011 en zijn eerste solotentoonstelling in de Romeinse galerieruimte.

 

Jonathan Meese (Tokio, 1970, woont en werkt in Berlijn en Ahrensburg) staat bekend om zijn veelzijdige oeuvre, dat bestaat uit uitbundige schilderijen, extravagante installaties en extatische performances, manifesten, evenals een krachtig oeuvre van sculpturen in diverse media. Met zijn rijke en persoonlijke mythologie, boordevol symbolen, neologismen en metaforen, wekt het veelzijdige oeuvre van de kunstenaar fascinatie op. Schijnbaar moeiteloos weet Meese zich in elk genre te onderscheiden met een onafhankelijk en uniek vocabulaire dat zijn werken een visuele energie en kwaliteit geeft die volgens curator Robert Fleck ongeëvenaard is sinds Picasso. Alle werken van Meese bevatten een vorm van humor die neigt naar het groteske, evenals een krachtige, originele creatieve wil. Beide worden gedreven en ondersteund door een streven naar de heerschappij van de kunst, de dictatuur van de kunst. Wat hier bedoeld wordt, is de ontwikkeling van een nieuwe wereldorde waar kunst de wetgevende macht is en vrij spel de basis van al het leven en creatie. Deze utopische benadering loopt als een rode draad doorheen zijn werk en brengt de afzonderlijke delen van zijn oeuvre bij elkaar tot een Gesamtkunstwerk. Hij streeft niet naar anarchie, maar eerder naar de regel van metabolische noodzakelijkheid: “Art is total play”.

 

Voor zijn solotentoonstelling in Palazzo Donarelli Ricci laat Jonathan Meese zich inspireren door de machtige keizerlijke dynastieën van het oude Rome. Hij presenteert schilderijen, tekeningen, sculpturen, manifesten en een video die allemaal gaan over verschillende prototypes van keizers, hun families, hun omgeving en hun acties en gedragingen. Hij toont beelden van Agrippina, Nero, Caligula, Drusilla, Commodus, Galba, Julius Caesar, Claudius, Tiberius, de kat van Nero, de hond van Agrippina, Caesarion, Cleopatra, gladiatoren, enzovoort. De hele tentoonstelling is Gesamtkunstwerk Italia, Gesamtkunstwerk Rome, Gesamtkunstwerk Total Empire of Art en is een liefdesverklaring aan de oude Romeinse geschiedenis. De tentoonstelling is een totale collage waarin Meese speelt met alle objecten en beelden. Hij maakt hiermee nieuwe verbanden, als een meesterlijke kunst-poppenspeler. Meese claimt: "Ik ben ook gewoon een caesar van de kunst, zoals alle kunstenaars en ik stop mezelf in het decor en in de rol, alsof ik een speler ben in totale cosplay- en vermommingsavonturen. In de kunst zijn alle vermommingen en alle rollenspellen toegestaan, nodig en geaccepteerd, er is geen limiet. Kunst is totale vrijheid, we mogen met alles spelen, alles gebruiken en alles transformeren. Censuur zou verboden moeten zijn in de kunst. Kunst is vrij en geen ideologie. Kunst is niet onze smaak, kunst is evolutie, kunst is de drijvende kracht achter de toekomst. Kunst is wat gedaan moet worden, niet onze politieke of religieuze opvattingen. Kunst is geen levensstijl, kunst is totale stofwisseling. Kunst is geen politiek, kunst is geen religie. Kunst is totale macht zonder ideologisch gezag. We hebben het Gesamtkunstwerk Europa nodig, we hebben het Gesamtkunstwerk planeet aarde nodig, we hebben het Gesamtkunstwerk kosmos nodig, het Gesamtkunstwerk universum, het Gesamtkunstwerk Big Bang, en het Gesamtkunstwerk totale liefde. Kunst zou ons moeten regeren. Kunst is totaal leiderschap van liefde. Kunst zal alle ideologieën vernietigen. Kunst is totaal wonderland. Kunst zal alles overwinnen. Kunst is totale toekomst. Kunst is totale liefde.”

 

Jonathan Meese heeft wereldwijd geëxposeerd in musea en toonaangevende kunstgalerieën, waaronder solotentoonstellingen in Pinakothek der Moderne, München; Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien, Wenen; CAC Málaga, Málaga; Deichtorhallen Hamburg en Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt.
