Tim Van Laere Gallery is pleased to present 'Multikulti Sause', an exhibition of new works by Kati Heck. The exhibition, the artist’s first solo show at the gallery, consists of 7 monumental sized paintings, 2 photographic works and a series of drawings. The title of the exhibition alludes to Angela Merkel's statement 'Multikulti ist tot'.
Kati Heck stages people from her immediate environment in her canvases with a heightened sense of drama and irony. Her paintings often display happenings she held during her journeys or in the artist's studio. Her whole gang is there, the local night shop owner, acquaintaces with a dress-up fetish, malicious old men, indie kids, her friends. The nude female form is depicted confrontational, almost in a softcore porn kind of way. Heck's protagonists are engaged in indeterminable tasks, making it challenging for us to figure out what they are thinking or in which mood they are in. Often they don't communicate with each other and seem to be in different time zones.
Combining a realistic illusionism worthy of the Old Masters with a sketchy and almost precipitous draughtsmanship, Heck undermines the pomposity of her amazing virtuosity as a painter. This way she balances her compositions both stylistically and iconographically. Humorously melding different influences, she creates a exorbitantly individual portrayal of the everyday.
Kati Heck was born 1979 in Dusseldorf, Germany; she lives and works in Antwerp. She has exhibited globally with museums and leading art galleries including among others solo shows at Mary Boone Gallery, New York; Museum Het Domein Sittard, Netherlands; group shows at Saatchi Gallery, London; Bozar, Brussels; National Art Museum of China, Bejing, China.

Tim Van Laere Gallery presenteert 'Multikulti Sause', een tentoonstelling met nieuw werk van Kati Heck. Heck's eerste solotentoonstelling bij de Tim Van Laere Gallery bestaat uit 7 grote monumentale schilderijen, twee fotografische werken en een serie tekeningen. De titel van de tentoonstelling verwijst naar Angela Merkel's statement 'Multikulti ist tot'.
Kati Heck ensceneert in haar doeken met een sterk gevoel voor drama en ironie mensen uit haar directe omgeving. Haar schilderijen beelden vaak happenings uit, die ze tijdens haar reizen of in het atelier hield. Haar hele crew is hier aanwezig: de lokale nachtwinkel eigenaar, kennissen met een dress-up fetish, op seks beluste oude mannen, indie kids, haar vrienden. Het naakte vrouwelijke lichaam wordt confronterend, bijna op een softcore porno manier afgebeeld. Heck's protagonisten houden zich bezig met moeilijk te definiëren taken, waardoor het ingewikkeld is voor ons om uit te vinden wat ze denken of in welke stemming ze zijn. Vaak lijken ze niet met elkaar te communiceren alsof ze zich in verschillende tijdzones bevinden.
Door een klassiek realisme zoals dat van de oude meesters te combineren met zeer uiteenlopende tekenstijlen, ondermijnt Heck de gewichtigheid haar virtuositeit als schilder. Zo balanceert ze haar composities zowel stilistisch als iconografisch. Op een humorvolle manier vermengt ze verschillende invloeden en creëert ze een exorbitant individueel beeld van het alledaagse.
Kati Heck werd in 1979 in Düsseldorf geboren, maar woont en werkt in Antwerpen.
